Digital signatures issued by means of the Mobiil-ID service comply with all security requirements valid in Estonia and they are legally as binding as handwritten signatures or signatures issued with the ID-card.
In case of Mobiil-ID, the personal keys are stored on your SIM card and, similar to the ID-card, you need a PIN to use them.
In order to identify yourself securely by means of Mobiil-ID, you need to click a respective button in the web, after which your mobile telephone will prompt you to enter your PIN. You will be identified after entering the code. The same routine is followed also when signing documents digitally.
The advantage of Mobiil-ID is your independence of computers with card readers. Furthermore, using of the Mobiil-ID service requires no additional software in your computer.
All modern mobile telephones are capable of using the Mobiil-ID service (the phone must have a GSM Phase 2+ support, which is a standard for almost all mobile telephones produced since 2000).
In order to use the Mobiil-ID service, you need to acquire a special SIM card. EMT was the first operator to issue such SIM cards in Estonia in 2007, the other operators followed EMT in 2009. Together with the new SIM, a user gets two new PIN codes: the Mobiil-ID PIN1 for personal identification and the Mobiil-ID PIN2 for issuing digital signatures.
