Digital signing in the Internet

Digital signing support can be added to all web applications. Verification of the signature is simple and it is fully achievable in a server with components of the DigiDoc library.

In order to provide digital signing functionality, you need a component that would directly interact with the ID-card, manage document hashes, ask for PIN codes, etc. Such a component can be realised by using two technologies.

The ActiveX component (EIDCard.cab), using Microsoft CAPI/CSP technologies

Enables digital signing for the users of Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Java Applet

The multi-platform Java Applet enables digital signing for users of Mozilla/Firefox/Netscape in Windows environment. It is also functional with the above indicated browsers in Linux and Mac OS X.

Requirements to web applications

In order to ensure the security of users, every web application with integrated digital signing functionality needs to comply with two requirements as follows. These requirements are also based on the European directive that concentrates on digital signing.

  1. The user can review the data in a reasonable way before signing.
  2. After signing, the user must be able to verify the contents that were signed, i.e. the user must be able to download the DigiDoc container with the initial signed data and signatures.
