In 2003, the cities of Tallinn and Tartu started the development for implementation of an electronic payment system in the sector of public transportation. A pilot project, based on a so called IDEE card was used in Tartu already earlier. In these cities, the ID-card will replace physical tickets, enabling the passengers to electronically prove their right to use the means of transportation, whereas an inspector will verify the validity of that right by using a central database.
The public procurement for implementation of an electronic payment system in Tallinn was won by a joint bid of AS Sertifitseerimiskeskus, Eesti Ühispank and EMT that jointly offered the ID-ticket system.
Passengers can purchase tickets for certain periods from various channels.
A service environment www.pilet.ee is available in the Internet, enabling users to buy the ticket, see the current status of their ticket and carry out other necessary transactions, incl. seeing additional information about the functionality and use of the system.
