Error: "Could not open HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Approved Extensions"

In some situations ID-software installation fails with these errors:

Windows 7, Vista and XP

Windows 8

Solution is to delete "Approved Extensions" folder from Windows registry. The error is displayed because this folder is used by some other software. 

There is two options for removing the folder.

1) Manually:

  • Windows 7, Vista and XP users should press Windowsi key (WinKey) + R, write regedit in the search window and press Enter. Then navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Approved Extensions and delete Approved Extension folder (right click and choose delete from drop down menu). 
  • Windows 8 user should press Windowsi key (WinKey) + R, write regedit in the search window and press Enter. Then navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER32\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Approved Extensions and delete Approved Extension folder (right click and choose delete from drop down menu). 

2) With a custom registry file:

When manual instructions are too complicated or you are want to be certain that the removal will be done correctly, then write to ID-card support at abi at id dot ee and they will send you a pre-made registry folder removal file. 

If changes were successful then the ID-card installation will work as usual. 

Important!

In case software installation fails even after using the ID-card support pre-made file and you will be displayed this error:

To delete Approved Extensions folder you need to give full control over that folder to the user with admin rights. 

To change permissons do the following:

Press Windowsi key (WinKey) + R, write regedit in the search window and press Enter. Then navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Approved Extensions

Select the Approved Extensions folder and using right click choose „Premissions“ from the drop-down menu.

Next window should display all users from which you should choose the desired one. When for some reason the required username is not there then in either case choose "Add".

In the next window insert your username (or part of it) to the empty box (username can be seen either in the upper right corner of Start menu or in Control Panel User info section). After name insertion click on the „Check Names“ button. 

When the name or a part of it matches the real user name then the computer will confirm and complete it with a full system user name. To continue press „OK“.

In this window you should check „Allow“ box at the  „Full Control“ section and press "OK"again. 

Finalize everything by closing all windows except Registry Editor and try to delete the „Approved Extensions“ folder by right clicking and choosing "Delete" from the drop-down menu. If there is no error message then the folder was successfully deleted and you can continue with software installation.
