What happens if the ID-card certificates are not renewed by 1 July 2017?

20.03.2020

ID-card (incl. residence permit) certificates that have been issued before October 2014 have to be renewed by 1 July 2017. After 1 July 2017, it will only be possible to renew the certificates of those documents that have been issued after October 2014.

From 1 July, it will not be possible to renew the ID-card (incl. residence permit card) certificates in the ID-card management tools. If you attempt to do so, the following message will be displayed: “Your ID-card certificates cannot be renewed starting from 01.07.2017. Your document is still valid until its expiring date and it can be used to login to e-services and give digital signatures. If there are problems using Your ID-card in e-services please contact ID-card helpdesk by phone (+372) 677 3377 or visit Police and Border Guard Board service point.”

From 1 July 2017, it will also not be possible to renew these cards in the Police and Border Guard service points.

What is the impact of not renewing your certificates and what should you do?

If you have not renewed your certificates, then the physical document and the certificates will also remain valid until their expiry date after 1 July. It will still be possible to conduct person identification activities and give digital signatures, but certificates that have not been renewed may cause problems in the future when using certain e-services. For example, it is known that there will be problems with the using of e-services in the Google Chrome internet browser from autumn 2017. Should this happen, try some other browser (like Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer) to use the e-services.

If there are complications in using the e-services in the future (after the restriction imposed by Google Chrome), and you wish to have new certificates with stronger cryptography for your card, you will have to apply for a new document and pay the state fee. Documents with unrenewed certificates that have problems with using the e-services will not be exchanged at the expense of the Police and Border Guard by warranty claim.
