Digitally Signed Documents Can Be Viewed on Smartphones and Tablets

Users of smartphones and tablet PCs with either Android or Apple operating systems are now able to open digitally signed documents.

Digitally signed documents can be viewed by using DigiDoc, a free app available at Android Market and AppStore. The portable version of Digidoc was developed jointly by EMT and Finestmedia, with Certification Centre involved in the testing.

According to Tiit Tammiste, Head of Technology Division at EMT, the sales of smartphones and especially tablet PCs has exploded and people want to use the Internet anywhere, anytime. „Because digital signing of documents has grown rapidly, users started to frequently find themselves in a situation where they could not open these documents on smartphones and tablets because the software for digitally signed documents was available only for personal computers”, said Tammiste. „This app has now solved the problem”.

„We are already working on the next version of the app which will enable digital signing of documents on handheld devices”, said Priit Penjam, CEO at Finestmedia. „The enhanced version will be launched in a few months, but in the meantime, we decided to make the existing functionality public in order to meet the demand for viewing digitally signed documents on portable devices”.

„Consumers have eagerly awaited for digitally signed documents to be usable on smartphones and tablets. At the same time, we want for the development to take place in a controlled and secure way”, said Liisa Lukin, Business Development Manager at Certification Centre. „Mobile version of the new DigiDoc has been tested against compatibility with other DigiDoc applications”.

Finestmedia is a software development company who is active in Estonian and Finnish markets and whose smartphone app department is the largest in Estonia. Finestmedia has been involved in development of several prominent apps in Estonia, for example, TaxiPal, Elion’s minuTV, Delfi, etc.

EMT is the leading mobile operator in Estonia who developed the Mobile ID service that enables digital signing via mobile phones. By now, Mobile ID has been certified by the state, and this made it possible to use Mobile ID for voting in parliament elections last year.
