A code envelope with the PIN's necessary for the electronic use of the ID-card will be issued to you along with the ID-card.

You will find 3 codes in the code envelope: PIN1, PIN2 and PUK

  • PIN1 is meant for personal identification. The PIN1 will be requested by websites that can be entered via ID-card.
  • PIN2 is meant for digital signing. By entering the PIN2, you give a digital signature that is considered equal to a hand-written signature pursuant to legislation. Use the PIN2 carefully and responsibly just as you would treat a hand-written signature.
  • The PUK is meant for unlocking locked PIN's. If you enter the incorrect PIN1 or PIN2 three times, it will be locked. You can unlock the PIN's in the ID-card administration tool with the PUK.

Important information concerning the PIN's:

  • The PIN's do not expire, but you can change them as often as you like.
  • Change your PIN1, PIN2 and PUKs immediately after you have received the ID-card. Do not use the same code for the sake of better memorisation! You can change the PIN's in the DigiDoc4 Client.
  • Keep your PIN's secret.
  • Never carry your PIN's with your ID-card.

If a malicious person gains access to your PIN's and ID-card, he or she will be able to impersonate you in the internet and give a legally binding digital signature on your behalf!

If you have lost or forgotten the PIN's:

In the event that you have lost or forgotten your ID-card/digi-ID PINs, you will be able receive a new code envelope from a service point of Police and Border Guard Board.

The service point of Police and Border Guard Board issue the new PINs free of charge.

If you have lost or forgotten your ID-card PIN-codes while abroad and coming to Estonia is not an option, then you can apply for a new ID-card with new PIN-codes that will be sent to the foreign representations of the Republic of Estonia.
