Mobile payments exceed number of payments made at branches

30.07.2012

In June the number of payments made on mobile phones exceeded the number of payments made at Swedbank branches for the first time. The total number of payments made at branches in Estonia was approximately 46,000, while the number of mobile payments came to around 47,000.

Erkki Saarniit, Head of E-Channels Operations at Swedbank, says that this trend in mobile payments has been growing for some time. “Summer and the holiday season have increased the popularity of mobile banking – in June, for example, Swedbank’s mobile apps were downloaded more than 53,000 times,” Saarniit said. “People mainly use them to check their account balances and make payments.”

“We’re sure the trend we’re seeing of people using their mobiles to take care of their finances will continue to grow, and we expect the number of users to remain high after the holiday season,” Saarniit continued. “We’ll be doing everything we can to make using mobile banking services as easy and convenient as possible for our clients.”

In comparison to 2011, visits to the Mobile Bank have increased five-fold among corporate clients and three-fold among private clients. The use of Mobile ID for identification purposes is also on the up, with every fourth Mobile Bank client using this option. The overall increase in the use of Mobile ID in the Internet Bank and Mobile Bank is approximately 50%.
Swedbank’s Mobile Bank is available as an app for Android and iPhone users. All daily banking transactions can be carried out using the app, such as transfers, checking account balances and statements and sending account numbers, as well as checking the locations of ATMs and more.
Other mobile users can use the same options via the mobile web browser at www.swedbank.ee.
