Starting today, the default file format in ID-card software is BDOC

20.03.2020

Today the Information Systems Authority (RIA) will publish the ID-card software version 3.10, which uses BDOC as a default digital signature format. This step will replace the previous DDOC file format with BDOC.

The head of RIA eID field Vallo Veinthal has said that the DDOC file format introduced in 2002 was primarly designed to be used in Estonia.

"BDOC is a part of normal development - the documents signed with BDOC are compatible with international standards and the hash- and cryptoalgorithms used are significantly more secure," said Veinthal.

According to him a significant amount of Estonian businesses and instituions are already using BDOC format.  BDOC format has been available in ID-card software for a while, but now it has been set as a default file format. The new version of ID-card software will continue to support files in DDOC format.
