Support for backward compatibility will be removed from the Web eID solution at the end of this year. This means that e-services offering web-based authentication and signing with the ID card must fully transition to the Web eID solution.
In 2022, Web eID components were added to the ID software, replacing the previously used web-based ID card signing solution (Token Signing).
In order to ensure a smooth transition to the Web eID solution, temporary backward compatibility support was introduced. This allowed users to continue signing online with their ID card in the e-services that were still using the previous solution (hwcrypto.js). As a result, e-services were not required to migrate to the Web eID solution immediately, and users could continue signing with their ID card even in services that had not yet adopted Web eID.
The transition period will end at the close of this year, and support for backward compatibility will be removed from the Web eID solution. From the end of this year onwards, web-based signing with the ID card will only function in the e-services that have fully implemented the Web eID solution.
What does this mean for e-service providers?
All e-services that offer web-based authentication or signing with the ID card and have not yet transitioned to the Web eID solution must do so no later than at the end of this year. More detailed information about implementing the solution is available on the id.ee website.
If the transition is not completed, it will no longer be possible to sign online with the ID card in those services after the end of the year.
Why is this change being made?
The purpose of this change is to reduce technical complexity and browser-based issues, and to ensure a consistent and clear user experience.
