The new version 2.7.0 of the RIA DigiDoc mobile application has been updated with existing features and the addition of the ability to sign with an ID-card using NFC technology. This update makes signing significantly more convenient and contactless for users, providing an alternative to signing with a card reader.
The Estonian Information System Authority (RIA) released the new version 2.7.0 of RIA DigiDoc for iOS devices on October 9, 2024, in the App Store, and for Android devices on March 17, 2025, in Google Play.
The biggest change in the released version is the ability to sign with an ID card via NFC technology. NFC, or Near Field Communication technology, enables contactless communication between a phone and an ID card, and its implementation extends the electronic use of the ID card. Thanks to this new technology, users can now digitally sign with their ID card without the need for an ID card reader in the RIA DigiDoc mobile app.
„The implementation of NFC technology in the RIA DigiDoc mobile app is an important step in the development and modernization of e-services, offering users a convenient and contactless option for digital signing,” said Anna Õuekallas, Head of the Electronic Identity Department at RIA. „This is a pilot project, during which we are collecting valuable feedback from users to further develop the app and make it even better and more user-friendly. Our goal is to provide the best possible user experience, which is why we encourage users to try the new NFC technology and share their feedback for further app development,” added Õuekallas.
As a first step, NFC technology in the RIA DigiDoc mobile app has been introduced only for digital signing, and other functionalities, such as managing electronic identity settings, are not yet available via NFC.
In addition to NFC support, support for CAdES signature validation and validation of the ASICS container containing the signature were also added to the RIA DigiDoc application. Furthermore, signing settings and document management options have been enhanced, and several minor updates were made.
