In the new version of the ID-software DigiDoc4, documents can be signed with Smart-ID in addition to ID-card and mobile-ID.
"Last year, we reached an agreement on the terms of the contract with SK ID Solutions, which offers the Smart-ID service, and then we started developing Smart-ID support for the ID software. Different signing tools give more people the opportunity to use ID-software and use the solution that works best for them," said Mark Erlich, head of RIA's electronic identity department.
"The fact that it is now also possible to sign documents with Smart-ID in the DigiDoc application is very great news and long awaited by all Smart-ID users. We have had a good cooperation with RIA, and this is a nice birthday present for Smart-ID, which has just turned three years old. We are also happy that RIA has introduced an additional security measure, i.e. when signing with Smart-ID, the application requires choosing the correct one from among three control codes - this encourages other e-services to adopt it as well," said Liisa Lukin, business manager of additional services at SK ID Solutions.
In the DigiDoc4 software, Smart-ID users who created an account after November 8, 2018 can give a digital signature equal to a handwritten one. The reason lies in the fact that Smart-ID was added to the list of qualified signature tools from that date. In order to sign with a previously created account, the Smart-ID account must be deleted and a new account created. Additional information on how to do this can be found on the Smart-ID website. In national e-services, Smart-ID can be used as an authentication tool from September 2019.
Questions about creating and using a Smart-ID account should be addressed to the Smart-ID user support. In DigiDoc4, regular users can provide a reasonable amount of free signatures via Smart-ID, business customers must sign a contract with the service provider SK ID Solutions to use DigiDoc4s Smart-ID. Business customers can read more here. With the default settings, Smart-ID can only be signed with an Estonian personal identification number. Users who have signed a contract can also add signatures with Latvian and Lithuanian personal identification codes.
The newly released ID software version (20.01) is also the last to support Windows 7 and macOS 10.11, or older operating systems. Future versions for these older operating systems are no longer being developed or tested. If the user cannot use DigiDoc4 on a computer, the alternative is the RIA DigiDoc mobile application, which is available for iOS and Android. Mobile apps do not currently support Smart-ID.
It is important for service providers to know that DigiDoc4 switched to mobile-ID REST API because SK ID Solutions will stop providing the DigiDocService web service in October this year.
