Starting November 17, 2025, the Police and Border Guard Board will begin issuing ID-cards with a completely new design and updated technical solution.
Below is the most important information you need to know about the new ID-cards:
- After receiving your new ID-card, you must change your PIN2 code. Only after changing your PIN2 code will you be able to use your ID-card for digital signing. You can change your PIN2 code in the ID software.
- To use the new ID-card electronically, you must install the latest version of the ID software on your computer or smart device.
- All ID-cards issued to date will remain valid until their expiry date. Applying for the new documents and receiving new documents will continue as before. Differences in the use of ID-cards arise when PIN codes or PUK codes are forgotten, when an ID-card is lost, or when the user wishes to terminate the use of the electronic part of the ID-card.
- In order to introduce the new ID-cards, all organizations and companies providing e-services must update their systems before the new cards are issued. If the software and interfaces are not updated in time, authentication, signing, and customer card functions may not work with the new ID-cards in the first few days.
- The technical transition may take some time, and as a result, not all e-services related to the use of the new ID-card may be fully functional in the first few days.
- As this is a large-scale technical transition, it will not be possible to use the new ID-card for authentication in foreign e-services at first. Read more here.
