The timestamping service makes it possible to prove that certain data existed at a certain moment: it is an additional security measure to digital signing, which helps guarantee that the content of digitally signed documents has not been changed in the meantime.
DigiDoc4 adds a timestamp itself in the case of everyday signing: you don’t have to do anything for this.
There are two providers of the trust service of the timestamping service in Estonia at present – SK ID Solutions AS and Guardtime AS.
The timestamping service mediation service mediated by RIA:
The Information System Authority, i.e. the RIA, mediates the timestamping service to government sector institutions that need to stamp large quantities of files. A cooperation agreement must be entered into with RIA in order to use the timestamping service via the mediation service provided by RIA. The mediation service uses the service of the timestamping service provider who won the public procurement organized by the Centre of Registers and Information Systems (RIK). Using the mediation service means that if the contractual partner of the jointly procured timestamping service changes, the persons who perform public functions that have subscribed to the mediation service will not have to make changes in their information systems. The persons who subscribe to the service do not have to worry about the existence of the timestamping service contracts either.
RIA guarantees the constant existence of the timestamping service via the mediation service.
